India Office 21 JUL 00

London, S. W.

20th July 1900.

I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your lecter

of the 19th instant No.23125/1900 and to acquaint you in

reply that on the 16th instant the Viceroy was asked to send

if possible a third Native Infantry Regiment for duty in

Hong Kong, in addition to the two previously ordered.

I am also to attach a copy of a Lelegram which was sent

yesterday by Lord George Hamilton to the General Officer

Commanding at Hong Kong, from which it will be seen that

steps have been taken for the security of Hong Kong and

Shanghai.

From Secretary of State for India to General Officer Commanding, Hong Kong, 19th July 1900.

It is decided that 3,000 of the troops from India shall, for the present, halt at Hong Kong. Please therefore detain four Infantry regiments and Brigade Staff, and inform General Gasclee of action taken by telegraph. This force is to be held available for immediate service at Shanghai, or elsewhere, quite independent of regiments detailed previously for garrison duty in Hong Kong. This is an interim arrangement.

I have he honour to be, Sir,

Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office,

ន.

W.

Your obediary Servant,

Stedman

Major-General,

Military Secretary.
